A self drive hike here lets you discover an ancient transport route used throughout the centuries by mountain people and by San Magno followers. At the Terre di Castelmagno company you will get to know mountain Castelmagno and mountain pasture Castelmagno thanks to a guided tour and to a tasting menu. The path starts at Campomolino, 1150 meters high, and takes you to Borgata Chiappi, 1720 meters high. From here, you can also reach the San Magno Sanctuary, 1760 meters high.

The origin of the name Castelmagno could come from the San Magno Sanctuary or from Charlemagne who was a great cheese lover. Apparently the production of Castelmagno started in year 1000, while it is certain that in 1277 a yearly tax was to be paid to the Marquis Saluzzo. In 1722 there was talk of Castelmagno rounds supplies to the local lord, as decreed by King Vittorio Amedeo II. Today the cheese on sale is often produced industrially, in valley dairies, yet there still are malgari who respect traditional production principles, passed on orally from father to son.
